Paper Bags and Envelopes Junk Journal
by Anne Thompson

And now for something completely different.

I visited Cumston Library in the neighboring town of Monmouth, Maine on Wednesday afternoon and the librarians there showed me the paper bag junk journals they had made with children the week before.  I thought this would make a great project for me, too, as well as one I could easily do with my grandchildren.  I changed mine a bit from what they had done by adding envelopes and used it to document this past weekend as I played tourist in the Midcoast Maine area not far from my home.

to construct the junk journal

  • select an assortment of paper bags and envelopes in several sizes and shapes--I used two brown paper lunch bags as the base for my junk journal; tuck in and glue down the flaps on the envelopes and the flaps on the bottom of the bags

  • fold the bags and long envelopes in half; use one of the brown bags as the outside then tuck in the other bags and envelopes to create the basic journal structure

  • punch three, four, or five holes along the folded edge through all of the layers

  • use thread or ribbon or cord to tie the journal together and create a spine

  • glue cardstock to the front cover and on any of the other surfaces in the journal that you choose
  • add written details and tuck items into the various pockets

For example, I added the cover from Thursday evening's theatre program over two of the pages and tucked the theatre tickets, cast list, and musical numbers list in the first envelope pocket.

There are pages and pockets for a trip to the library, the Sunday crossword puzzles, a visit to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and information about meals out, etc.  I left some space to add photographs from the weekend later and more journaling.

For the cover, I chose a scrap of yellow cardstock 4X4 from the SUNNY ORANGE COLLECTION SP1002 (after all this month's theme for the blog challenge is YELLOW) and an even smaller scrap of a coral plaid from MADRAS PLAID CORAL AND GREEN PP1013.  Because I spent the weekend in the Midcoast area and quite a lot of time at Ocean Point on Sunday afternoon I chose to add an underwater scene to the front cover using Memory Box dies and papers.

  • CORAL AND KELP RIBBON 94569
  • LUSH GREEN COLLECTION SP 1003
  • GRACEFUL JELLYFISH 94574
  • RAINBOW REFLECTIONS MIRROR PAD PP1003
  • FESTIVE GLITTER PAD GP1006

I think as I add photographs from the weekend into this junk journal I will also tuck in some additional Memory Box die cuts.  I'm already thinking about floral ones that will coordinate with photographs I took at the Botanical Gardens.  I have three more pockets and a couple of pages left for journaling.  I can't wait to show this to my grandchildren and have them create their own junk journals to document their adventures.

Such a fun project!

Happy Crafting!
