When I saw that this month's challenge involves paint, I got out my Memory Box Open Studio Watercolor Paper WP101 and my favorite Kuretake water colors to make some papers that I could then use to die cut flowers to create two cards.
I knew I wanted to work with both greens and oranges and gold to coordinate with the Madras Plaid Coral and Green papers. In the photo below you can see the watercolor papers I made (after I die cut the Dreamy Freesia blossoms). I wet my paper first with a wide brush and clean water and then used a smaller wet brush to add separate bands of orange and gold on one paper. For the other I used a variety of shades of green also working wet on wet, let it dry a bit before adding dots of yellow that I then dragged across the paper with a dry sponge brush. I cut two freesias from each paper.
For both cards I used the same dies:
- DREAMY FREESIA 94476
- GLADE BUTTERFLY 94578
- JUST BECAUSE POSH SCRIPT 94530
And I used papers from these pads:
- BERRY RED COLLECTION SP1001
- LUSH GREEN COLLECTION SP1003
- MADRAS PLAID CORAL AND GREEN PP1013
- POLISHED FOIL PAD FP1001
Card One
to make this card after painting and die cutting the water color papers
- white notecard
- orange cardstock 4 X 5 1/4
- orange plaid 3 3/4 X 5
- a strip of a different orange plaid 1 X 5
- die cut the butterfly, once from the same orange cardstock and once from a scrap of an orange plaid; attach the two pieces with a glue dot and use another glue dot to adhere it to the narrow paper strip; add a tiny gem in the top center and fold up the wings a bit for added dimension
- attach one freesia stem and blossom flat on the card front, add a gem in the center; attach just the stem of the second freesia and add a gem in the center
- cut Just Because, the background from gold foil paper and the cursive words from more of the orange cardstock, glue together and add to the card front
Card Two
to make this card after painting and die cutting the water color papers
- white notecard
- green cardstock 4 X 5 1/4
- green plaid 3 3/4 X 5
- a strip of a different green plaid
- die cut the butterfly, once from the same green cardstock and once from a scrap of a green plaid; attach the two pieces with a glue dot and use another glue dot to adhere it to the narrow paper strip; add a tiny gem in the top center and fold up the wings a bit for added dimension
- attach one freesia stem and blossom flat on the card front, add a gem in the center; attach just the stem of the second freesia and add a gem in the center
- cut Just Because, the background from green foil paper and the cursive words from more of a green plaid paper, glue together and add to the card front
I'm inspired to paint more papers to have on hand for die cutting the many flowers from the current release. This card design is another that I could easily make again with different blooms as the focus. The small butterflies, the narrow strips, and the sentiment words were easily made from scraps as I cut background layering papers to the sizes I needed or I found papers in my scrap box. I found it helpful before I started work to select which papers I wanted to use for the backgrounds so that I could paint coordinating panels for the flowers.
Happy Crafting!
These are both quite beautiful and the design is lovely. The colours, paper and elements all work together so well.
