Partial Die Cutting
by Laura Fulcher

Greetings friends.  Today I want to talk about partially cutting out a die rather than cutting out the whole thing.  My card above partially cut out the solid star so that it remained attached to the left side of the card and opened up space on the right side so that you can see the white inside of the card.  Here is a close up:

The first step was to place my solid star onto the front of the card and tape it down with low-tac tape:

You want the run the card through the machine open so that the star won't cut through the back of the card.

Next, you have to place the paper and die into your diecutting machine so that the places you want to cut are between your cutting plates and the parts that you don't want to cut will hang over the edge (not sandwiched between plates):

The right side of the star was between the plates, so it cut.  The left side was not between plates, so it didn't cut:

I then put my card in my paper cutter so that I could cut from the top of the card to the top of the star:

I flipped the card around and then cut from the bottom of the card to the bottom of the star:

When you cut around the top and bottom of the star, you are left with this:

What you are left with is a star shaped flap that shows part of the white inside of the card.  All that was left was to die cut the detailed star die that fits on top of the solid star and then glue it on top before adding a rhinestones and some Stickles for sparkle.

I could have also cut out a solid star and glued it onto my card, but I wanted to show you the technique, because there are times that you want a single layer card or you just want to cut out one part of a die and not the whole thing.

Let me know if you have any questions about the technique!

This die makes such a fab statement on this card, love the results of this technique.

Thank you for so clearly showing how to cut a partial die! Excellent!

Beautiful card and technique. Really like the colors you chose, too.
