I have two valentines today, my first attempts at using fun foam from the dollar store to create dimensional openings. This first card was going to be a shaker card until I glued on the foam before adding the clear acetate window. Oops!
I started by stacking up these items:
- two pieces of sticky-back foam stuck together and cut 3 3/8 X 5
- CHEERY FLOWER COLLAGE die 99946 face up (to cut into the cardstock I'd add in a second) and centered near the top
- a circle from the CIRCLE BASICS die set 30087 just a bit larger than and placed around the Cheery Flower Collage die and placed face down on the foam to cut into the foam
- a piece of pink cardstock cut 4 X 51/4 and centered face down on top of the other items
I ran this stack through my Big Shot. I then adhered the fun foam to the back of the pink cardstock piece--big mistake because I intended this to be a shaker card. But then I had other options for finishing the card, so all was not lost.
I selected a pink notecard and covered the front of it with Candy Buttons paper from Lawn Fawn. I glued the stacked piece on top.
Next I die cut the CHEERY FLOWER STEMS 99947 from Key Lime Gingham paper once and from Bubblegum Dot paper twice. I glued the green pieces on top of the flowers in the Cheery Flower Collage and snipped off the pink blossoms and added those on top. I love how these flowers and stems fit exactly on top of those in the collage die. I added small pearls to the centers of the flowers.
I made a sentiment block, stacking up scraps from the die cutting, adding one of the flowers and SENTIMENTAL BE MINE 99927 cut from more of the Key Lime Gingham paper. I glued that block in the lower left, overlapping the longest flower stem.
Here are the dies I used:
The second card:
This time I remembered the acetate! (I used an overhead projector transparency from an office supply store for the acetate, left over from my teaching days.) I used purple cardstock and a soft purple notecard. The background paper that shows through the window is from Lawn Fawn's Gotta Have Gingham collection. The sequins are FAIRY SPARKLE available from Birch Press Design. I used leftover scraps of the Candy Buttons paper for the flowers and Memory Box Violet Distressed Dots paper for the stems, Be Mine, and the sentiment block background. I love how the sequin colors coordinate with the plaid flowers! I used small gray pearls for the flower centers.
These were my first attempts ever at making shaker cards. I liked using the fun foam because it made a nice even background for the top card layer and I found it to be quite inexpensive at the dollar store--5 sheets for $1. I bought more over the weekend and will continue to perfect my technique. Have you tried shaker cards? Check out Penny's Blue Valentine from yesterday and other past posts from the Design Team for more ideas.

No, I haven't tried shaker cards and maybe I will for a special occasion. Nice recovery from an 'oops' card. I adore the plaid die cut flowers!

Anne, these are both sweet. I had to smile reading your post about forgetting the acetate. Done it! I have made a few shakers and I always have some sort of challenge but I manage. I know they aren't difficult as I have seen many other make them with ease but I seem to be rather awkward when doing it??? However, I will keep trying.
Penny's is amazingly beautiful in the blue. ♡

Love your cheery cards! Will have to check out the dollar store for the fun foam! Shaker cards scare me, but your comments give me some courage!

Very cute shaker cards. I like the papers you used. Fun story about forgetting the acetate on the first--sounds like something I would do.
