Checkmate!
by Anne Thompson

I've started making valentines and preparing for valentine-making classes later this month.  My personal challenge was to use one of the newest dies called CHECKMATE, no. 99354.  There are six chess pieces in this set.  I don't know much more about chess than the names of the pieces, so I spent some time at my computer researching chess and looking for chess quotes that I could print off and use as sentiments.  I settled on this quote:

After printing it out on white cardstock, I used STITCHED OVAL LAYERS no. 30069 to cut it to the size I wanted.  Then I cut two other ovals in gradually increased size, one from gold cardstock and one from black and layered all three pieces together with a tape runner onto a white notecard.

I die cut the chess pieces from the CHECKMATE set in gold cardstock.  To anchor them on the card, I cut a large square from black cardstock using STUDIO SQUARE LAYERS no 30021, and I cut a gold cardstock frame using SHAKER SQUARE FRAMES no. 30030.  I used glue dots to place five of the pieces inside the frame and left the Knight outside.

One card done for a chess-playing friend!

Happy Crafting!

great card and wonderful new die!

The GOLD is so fistulous on this card - you did a lovely layout - thanks for sharing your beautiful work!

Great card. Have you seen the recent DVD release of Pawn Sacrifice? Good movie. Hubby and I were in college and are old enough to remember the chess craze. Thanks for a wonderful card.

Thank you, Anne, for the inspiration. I have a chess playing friend but wasn't sure about the dies.

Adorable card, Anne! Love the sentiment.

So cute!

What a great card for a chess player. Love this set of dies. xx

Whoa...what a unique card...nice!

When I saw this die I really wondered what it would look like on a card. You didn't disappoint, Very classy!

Cool card. I wanted to o something with the chess pieces for my son.

Checkmate terrific! I was a fan of Bobby Fisher. Played lots of chess in high school. I still have the Chess set my Mother gave me. Not played chess in quite some time. I do play dominos with a friend once or twice a month.
