Peerless Watercolor Birds
by Laura Fulcher

Bluebirdwm

Greetings everyone. I hope you have enjoyed the blitz so far. The Winter 2015 release has new Open Studio stamps as well as clear stamp sets with coordinating sayings. There are so many great images to color.

For my cards today, I chose to use the Three Little Birds stamp. I started each card by die cutting 140lb watercolor paper with the new Open Studio Hexagon Layers and then stamped the birds with black Versafine ink (my favorite ink for watercoloring).

Next, I used an assortment of Peerless Watercolors to color the birds and sky.  The first card was colored with Viridian Green, Olive Green, and Light Green paints.  The sky was Alice Blue.

If you change your color palette, you get a completely different look:

Purplebirdwm

The second card used Burnt Umber, Amethyst, and Neutral Tint Peerless Watercolors for the birds and the same Alice Blue for the sky.

Before I talk about the third color palette, I want to talk about making mistakes in cardmaking.  For all of the cards, I finished the look by splattering them with blue and brown watercolor paint.  However, for one of the cards, I didn't test how much paint was on the brush and what was supposed to be a small splatter of paint became a deluge of color sprayed all over the card.  Sigh.  This is a reminder to always test out your sprays, brushes, markers, etc before applying them to your card.....especially as a final step.

I took a cropped picture of the birds so that you could see a third idea for coloring the birds without having to see the sections that are obscured by nickle-sized splotches of paint:

Yellow

For these birds, I used Warm Sepia, Golden Yellow, and Pearl Gray paints.

If you are interested in trying Peerless Watercolors, you can get a 15 color starter pack at Birch Press design

Would you like to win the Three Little Birds stamp?  Leave a comment on this blog post by Sunday, October 11 (11:59 pm EST) for your chance to win.  A winner will be selected at random from the comments to win the die.  Don't forget to visit the Outside the Box blog often during the blitz for more inspiration and more chances to win some of the new products.  Good luck!

I own lots of Memory Box dies but after seeing these cute birds I really must look into buying some stamps. Thank you for the inspiration, tips and ideas x

These birds are lovely, Laura, and you've given us some lovely ways to color them!

Beautiful birds and fabulous colours xx

Love the little birds, and I love the colors you've used. I'd enjoy the bird stamps, because I call my youngest granddaughter "my little bird," and it would be fun to use these on cards for her, and also scrapbook pages. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

Your card is beautiful! Wow! I love these little birds! Thank you for your giveaway!

Beautiful water coloring technique! I love how pretty those birds turned out!
Take care!

Beautiful cards and a fabulous stamp!

Gorgeous watercoloring. These birds are darling!

Three beautiful cards...love how each card looks so different thanks to your wonderful colouring!

Beautiful cards here and sooo nice to see more ideas with the same stamp too. I can see loads of used for this set, as these beautiful birds can go with almost anything we make, I think.
And such lovely watercoloring too.

So pretty. Both colours are stunning and so different. Ah yes, always a good idea to test first. I have often made such mistakes but now I do try and remember to test before doing. Splats are unpredictable, part of the fun, and yours are lovely on the first two cards. Hugz

Beautiful cards and birds! Lovely touch with the splatters!

WOW!!!

Beautiful card and the birds are so pretty. I've been working on trying to color birds lately...we have a lot of them in our yard and bird bath...amazing how Mother Nature colors the world. TFS your card and inspiration.

Beautiful cards. It's wonderful how the colour change makes for such a different look even with the same design. These birds are very sweet.

Oh my goodness...your birds are amazing. So beautiful. I'm in LOVE with the birds and the Hexagon dies. Great release products. So very nicely done!!!

So pretty, that watercoloring is lovely!
