Feathered Friends and Swooping Branches and Leaves by Jean Okimoto

A felt owl from the Feathered Friends Deep Edge Dies delivers a bright  greeting here today.  Coordinate them with the perfect printed and embossed papers from Birch Press for more texture and zingy color.  Hello, Jean Okimoto here with a birthday design for spring and summer celebrations.

MemoryBoxFeatheredFriendsDeepEdgeDies-MemoryBoxSwoopingBranchesAndLeaves-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxOpenStudioSpringLilacs-JeanOkimoto-VersaFineClair-MemoryBoxDiecutCards-DiecutFeltCards-DiecutFeltBirds

Attach adhesive label paper or a sticker sheet to fuchsia felt and diecut the Feathered Friends owl.  The paper backing stabilizes the felt and keeps adhesives from soaking through.  Cut the face from natural cardstock.

Cut the eyes and beak - from orange cardstock.  Color the eye circles with a black marker.

Cut the branch - from the Swooping Branches and Leaves Deep Edge dies set - from  recycled cardboard.

The gold embossed paper and bright leafprint are from Birch Press Design.  They quickly add bright splashes of color and earthy texture to the design.  Cut them with the 2" x 3-¼" and 1-¾" x 3" dies from the Rectangle Basics set.  Cut the wing from the embossed paper too.

Stamp the greeting from the Spring Lilacs Clear Stamp Set on an A-6 (4-½" x 6-¼") card of natural cardstock with Charming Pink VersaFine Clair.  Quickly emboss it with detail clear powder.

Assemble the card.  Add dark pink gem stickers.  I love how the leaves match the shape of the owl and wing...little things like that make me so happy!

The Deep Edge Dies are timesavers for quilting and fabric arts because they cut thru multiple layers of fabric and are specially made to easily release the diecut pieces.  Of course you can use them for cardstock - and handmade artpapers that can sometimes be challenging to cut.

May Challenge Inspiration – the Plush Elegant Butterfly by Jean Okimoto

The Plush Elegant Butterfly combines a little May Challenge inspiration - and a lot of copper thread - here today.  Hi there, Jean Okimoto here with a detailed design that's a bit more involved than my usual "quick and easy" ideas.    Hope you like it!

MemoryBoxPlushElegantButterfly-MemoryBoxWrappedStitchRectangles-MemoryBoxFollowYourBliss-MemoryBoxMorningGardenButterflies-JeanOkimoto-VersaFineClair-WatercoloredButterflies-WatercoloredCards-ButterflyDiecutCards

Spritz watercolor paper and paint it in pale, watery layers of pink, orange, yellow and teal Kaleidacolor dye ink refills.  They're vibrant, concentrated inks that can be used as liquid watercolors.  Dry the inks.

Attach adhesive label paper or a sticker sheet behind the pink portion and diecut it with the Plush Elegant Butterfly.  Diecut the center portion too.

Punch a 2 or 3mm hole in the center of the butterfly.  Securely tape one end of a  strand of metallic copper thread behind the butterfly.  Sew long stitches - beginning at the center hole - through and around the left half of the butterfly.  Repeat on the right half.  Tape the thread ends to the backside of the butterfly.

Diecut another butterfly from white cardstock and attach it behind the stitched butterfly to add dimension (and cover the backside of the stitches!).

Stitch the butterfly center with the copper thread.

Diecut the big antennae - from the Morning Garden Butterflies set- from rose gold mirror cardstock.  Attach it between the butterfly and the center portion.

Cut another section of the watercolored paper with the 2" x 3-¼" Wrapped Stitch Rectangle die.

Stamp "follow your bliss"   on a 5-½" square white card with Verdant VersaFine Clair.  Quickly emboss it with detail clear powder.

Attach two strips of tape from the Sugar Tape set, available at Birch Press Design.

Attach the diecuts to the card - use foam dots to elevate the wings.  Add pale pink gem stickers.

A quick switch of greetings could make this a Mother's Day, birthday or graduation card too. Thanks for stopping by...hope you'll try this technique.  It takes a few minutes - but the  detailed, sparkly results are worth the effort...promise.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the ASIA NOW class at Impress on Saturday!

Set a Garden Scene with the Glorious Floral Stem by Jean Okimoto

P1040384

The Glorious Floral Stem sets the scene for an afternoon of spring gardening with the Vintage Watering Can and Stitched Boots.  Hello, Jean Okimoto here with a garden greeting today.

Cut watercolor paper with the  3" x 4-¼" Rectangle Basics die.  Paint in shades of green, yellow and orange from the Melon Melody Kaleidacolor inkpad.  Spritz it with water, dry it for a few minutes, then heat-set with an embossing tool.

Stamp the flowers from the Garden Sketches Clear Stamps Set on watercolor ink with Nocturne VersaFine Clair.  Quickly emboss it with detail clear powder.  Place the die from the matching Garden Sketches Die Set over the image and sponge it with Cheerful VersaFine Clair.  Diecut it, and two more.

Cut Glorious Floral Stem from green cardstock, remove the flowers.

Cut Vintage Watering Can from copper metallic cardstock.

Attach glossy laminate over Key Lime Dots cardstock to create a shiny surface for the rainboots.  Diecut it with Stitched Rainboots.

Stamp the greeting from the Garden Sketches set with Nocturne and emboss it.  Cut it with the matching die.

Attach the diecuts to a top-folded A-2 card of green textured cardstock.

Add yellow-green gem stickers.

Forget Me Not Blooms, Garden Sketches and Wrapped Stitch Rectangles
by Jean Okimoto

Let's make some bright, glossy Forget Me Not Blooms with a VersaFine Clair inkpad for a quick accent on a colorful thank you card.  It's an easy, economical way to customize matching accents for spring and summer cards.

Hello, Jean Okimoto here tonight - on my 500th post here on Outside the Box.  No, I didn't really count them, but Typepad does.  This card was created to thank you for visiting our blog - and for all of your sweet and thoughtful comments.  I appreciate them - and you (!) - and hope you've been inspired to get the most from your personal Memory Box Collection of dies, stamps and papers.

MemoryBoxForgetMeNotBlooms-MemoryBoxWrappedStitchRectangles-MemoryBoxOpenStudioGardenSketches-VersaFineClair-Kaleidacolors-ImagineCrafts

Brayer vibrant orange Summertime VersaFine Clair onto smooth white cardstock.  Quickly heat-emboss it with clear powder.  Emboss the warm ink again with another layer of clear powder.  Diecut several sets of the flowers from the Forget Me Not Blooms from the cooled embossed cardstock.  They'll be glossy and bright, and great for layering onto the card.

Attach adhesive label paper or a sticker sheet to green cardstock and cut the Forget Me Not Blooms stem.  The paper backing adds dimension - without the tedious layering and glueing of multiple pieces.

Press the inks from the Kaleidacolor Melon Melody inkpad onto a large acrylic block.  Spritz watercolor paper with water, then paint it in loose, overlapping layers of ink.  Air-dry it, then spritz it with water.  Dry it with a heat-tool.  Diecut it with the 2"x3-¼" Wrapped Stitch Rectangle.

Cut white cardstock with the 2-¾" x 4" Wrapped Stitch Rectangle.

Stamp the greeting - from the Open Studio Garden Sketches Clear Stamps Set - with Green Oasis VersaFine Clair.   Emboss it with detail clear powder. Cut it with the banner design from the coordinating Garden Sketches Die Set.

Attach the diecuts to a top-folded white A-2 card - use foam dots for the greeting.  Add lime green gem stickers.

Think of all the glossy, bright accents  you can create with Memory Box dies and embossed VersaFine Clairs!  Flowers, butterflies, leaves, fishes, hearts, stars, hexagons, dots - and more.  Be sure to have your embossing powder and heat-tool ready - the Clairs dry pretty quickly.

BIG THANKS  for stopping by - today, and for the previous 499 posts.  I appreciate your visits - and the privilege of designing for Memory Box.  Thanks Dave and Monica!

Big Butterfly Wing and Glittered Honeycomb Square Hexagons
by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxBigButterflyWing-MemoryBoxHoneycombSquare-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-JeanOkimoto-MemoryBoxButterflies-MemoryBoxHoneycombs-MemoryBoxButterflyCards-WatercoloredButterflyCards-DiecutButterflies-DiecutButterflyCards-LiquidWatercolors-ImagineCrafts-ImpressCardsAndCrafts

Layer the beautiful Big Butterfly Wing over a watercolored background - then add glittery gold and iridescent glitter accents  for a card that's bright, dreamy, and ready for any occasion.  Hello, Jean Okimoto here with a design that seems to say "spring's here, now let's get ready for summer!"

MemoryBoxBigButterflyWing-MemoryBoxHoneycombSquare-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-JeanOkimoto-MemoryBoxButterflies-MemoryBoxHoneycombs-MemoryBoxButterflyCards-DiecutButterflyCards-LiquidWatercolors

Cover a 6" square of watercolor paper with diluted Imagine Crafts Kaleidacolor Dye Ink Refills. Air-dry it for a few minutes.  Spritz it with water, then dry it with a heat-tool.  The 6" square is more than you'll need - but it creates an array of pretty colors to chose from, and some extra paper to diecut the little hexagons.

Cut white cardstock with the 3-¾" x 5" Rectangle Basics Die.  Cut it with the Big Butterfly Wing.

Find a pretty section of the watercolored paper for your butterfly.  Cut it with the 3-½" x 4-¾" Rectangle Basics die.  It'll fit perfectly behind the butterfly cutout...no measuring required!

Attach the watercolored rectangle behind the white rectangle.  Attach the butterfly - slightly offset.

Cut the antennae and center portion from gold glittered paper.  I've used a great new glittered paper that's 21"x30" - it'll be at Impress soon.   It's easy to cut and doesn't leave a big mess of loose glitter attached to your cutting plate, work area, hands or face!

Cover a scrap of the watercolored paper with Scor-Tape and diecut Honeycomb Square.  Remove the liner and brush the adhesive-covered tiny hexagons with iridescent glitter - like Sparkle Glitter from Impress -  for custom-colored accents.  I also cut Scor-Tape sheets with the Honeycomb Square to create little hexagon-shaped adhesive pieces to attach the glittered hexagons.

Attach the diecuts to a 5-½" square white card.

Hope you like watercolored designs, glitter and butterflies - and have fun creating this design in your favorite colors.

A reminder...if you're in the Seattle area, be sure to stop by both Impress stores this weekend.  It's their annual Spring Sale - 20% shopping discounts, special displays and great samples to inspire you.  Join us for the GREEN GREETINGS class on Earth Day, April 22nd.  Green - the color and the concept - is the theme for colorful cards, recycled  and up-cycled supplies.  Everyone gets some extra supplies from my stash to make more class cards at home later.

Thanks for stopping by!

Long Dachshund, Dog Gone Clear Stamps Set and Wrapped Stitch Rectangles by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxLongDachshund-MemoryBoxWrappedStitchRectangles-MemoryBoxDoggoneClearStampsSet=JeanOkimoto-MemoryBoxDiecutCards-DogCards-DiecutDogCards-WashiTapeCards-BirchPressDesign-ImpressCardsAndCrafts-VersaFineClear

The new Long Dachshund - and his mirror-image buddy - contemplate life on a simple little card today.  The washi tape background from Birch Press Design gets a quick trim with the Wrapped Stitch Rectangle die.  Hello, Jean Okimoto here with a greeting for someone needing a bit of encouragement and support during a tough time.   MemoryBoxLongDachshund-MemoryBoxWrappedStitchRectangles-MemoryBoxDogGoneClearStamps-BirchPressDesign-JeanOkimoto-DogCards-DiecutDogCards-WashiTapeCards-DiecutWashiTapeCards

Attach adhesive label paper or a sticker sheet to tan and dark brown felt.  It will stabilize the felt and keep adhesives from saturating the fabric.  Cut Long Dachshund from dark brown felt.  Cut him again from the reverse side of the tan felt to create a left-facing dachshund.  Switch their ears.

Attach lime and turquoise duct tape to lightweight cardstock and cut the collars.

Attach strips of washi tape (about 3" long) to white cardstock and diecut the cardstock with the 2-¾" x 4" Wrapped Stitch Rectangles die.

Stamp the greeting - from the new Dog Gone Clear Stamps Set - with Verdant VersaFine Clair.

Attach the diecuts to a side-folded A-2 card of textured green cardstock.  Add green gem stickers.

Simple strips of washi tape can add so much to a quick card.  See the great patterns and beautiful colors featured on the Birch Press Design site.

Stand out in a crowd - and bee yourself - like the tall  Paper Flower from Birch Press Design.  The new Bee Yourself Clear Stamps add a lighthearted touch to any spring card, especially with glittery little bees.  Hi there, Jean Okimoto here with a sunny yellow card designed to brighten a drizzly spring day.

MemoryBoxTallGrassyStemsBorder-MemoryBoxStitchedRectangleTrimmings-MemoryBoxBeeYourselfClearStamps-BirchPressDesignPaperFlowers-JeanOkimoto

Cut 2-¾" x 4" Stitched Rectangle Trimmings from marshmallow chick cardstock.  Keep it in the die.   Attach narrow strips of Scor-Tape along the back edges to keep the outer frame and inner rectangle together.  Stamp the bee - from the Bee Yourself Clear Stamps Set - with Nocturne VersaFine Clair.

Impress recently received their 3rd shipment of these great VersaFine Clairs.  They're perfect for large solid areas and detailed designs. You can even emboss with them - just be sure to have your embossing powder and heat-tool handy and ready.  The Clairs are easy to stack and the snug lids keep the inks fresh and ready for your next project!

Cut about 4" of Tall Grassy Stems Border from green cardstock.  Trim it to fit the yellow background using the same rectangle die.  No measuring needed!

Stamp the greeting and another bee with Nocturne.  Dry the ink and cut it with the ¾" x 2" Stitched Rectangle Trimming.  Keep it in the die and attach narrow strips of Scor-Tape along the back edges again.

Attach the diecuts to an A-2 card.

Attach paper flowers from Birch Press Design  - these vintage-y beauties are from the Mine Flowers set.  Add some pretty yellow gem stickers.  Highlight the  bees with a clear glitter Wink of Stella pen.

Jumbo Peony, Rectangle Basics and Honeycomb Square by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxJumboPeony-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxHoneycombSquare-MemoryBoxNotecards-JeanOkimoto-MemoryBoxDiecutCards-WatercoloredCards-DiecutFlowerCards-WashiTapeCards-ImpressCardsAndCrafts

A watercolored Jumbo Peony meets matching washi tapes from Birch Press Design on a quick card for a busy spring weekend. Add a trio of glittery Honeycomb Square hexagons for sparkly accents and your card is ready for any occasion.

Happy weekend - Jean Okimoto here with a quick card in some of my favorite colors.  Hope you like them too!

MemoryBoxJumboPeony,MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxHoneycombSquare,BirchPressDesignWashiTapes-JeanOkimoto-MemoryBoxDiecutCards

Attach adhesive label paper or a sticker sheet to the smoother side of watercolor paper.  It keeps all of the pieces together when you cut the Jumbo Peony.  Carefully remove everything from the die with the pieces intact.

Press Wilted Violet, Lucky Clover and Salty Ocean Distress Oxides onto an acrylic stamp block.  Paint the peony in loose, overlapping layers of diluted inks and set it aside to dry.

Diecut Jumbo Peony from watercolor paper - toss the little pieces and attach the delicate diecut to the dry watercolored background.

Cut turquoise cardstock with the 1-¾" x 3" Rectangle Basics die.  You'll never have to guess about the right dimensions for layers and backgrounds if the Rectangle Basics set is part of your Memory Box stash.  The 16 versatile dies are perfectly proportioned for A-2 cards - and they're great for A-6 cards too!

Attach strips of washi tape from the Birch Press Design collection to a Violet Notecard.  I love how the tapes' colors change when they're layered over bright backgrounds.

Cut purple glittered cardstock with the Honeycomb Square for DIY instant bling.

MemoryBoxHoneycombSquare-JeanOkimoto

Here's a tip - use Honeycomb Square to cut Scor-Tape sheets into perfectly-sized sticky-dots to attach the glittered hexagons.  Attach it to a scrap of brightly-colored cardstock so it's easy to find when you need it.

Use a piercing tool to position the top liner and adhesive wherever you want to attach an accent.  Remove the liner, press your sequin or hexagon securely onto the adhesive. Use the blunt end of the piercing tool to give it an extra press.  That's it - no glues to dry, set up or squish out.

Take a few minutes to create a quick card (and maybe a few extra watercolored backgrounds) - and have a great weekend!  Thanks for visiting...join us again tomorrow for Penny's great card.

Plush Narrow Succulent, Little Dragonflies and Honeycomb Square by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxPlushNarrowSucculent,MemoryBoxLittleDragonflies,MemoryBoxRectangleBasics,MemoryBoxHoneycombBackground,BirchPressDesignTimeToCelebrate-JeanOkimoto-FeltFlowers-FeltFlowerCards-HandmadePapers-ShizenDesign-ImpressCardsAndCrafts

A deconstructed Plush Narrow Succulent becomes a felt flower on a spring card here...just another outside-the-box way to use one of the popular die sets from the Plush Collection.  The Lavender Folia Handmade Paper from Birch Press Design creates a leafy background to match a trio of Little Dragonflies.

Hi, Jean Okimoto here combining an assortment of different textures and materials with one great feature in common - they all cut perfectly with Memory Box dies!  Handmade screenprinted papers, wool-blend felt and glittered cardstock are beautiful additions to any project - but can be challenging to cut with scissors, paper trimmers, punches and rotary cutters.  Cutting them with dies from Memory Box, Poppystamps and Birch Press Design makes it quick and easy, with perfect results.

MemoryBoxPlushNarrowSucculent-MemoryBoxLittleDragonflies-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxHoneycombBackground-BirchPressDesignTimeToCelebrateClearStamps-JeanOkimoto

Cut the Folia leafprint with the 2-½" x 3-¾" Rectangle Basics die.

Cut the Plush Narrow Succulent petals and centers from purple felt.

Cut Little Dragonflies and Honeycomb Square from gold glittered cardstock.

Layer the individual petals and glue them in pairs.  Attach them around a 1-½" circle of scrap cardboard.  It's easier to work with them that way - and you can rotate the entire flower to find the perfect spot for them when assembling the card.  Attach the two center layers and a glittered hexagon.

Stamp the greeting - from the Time to Celebrate Clear Stamp Set - on a side-folded 5-½" square gray card with Wilted Violet Distress Oxide.  Purple Delight VersaFine Clair would be a great ink for this too if you can find it.  I've ordered one from Impress and look forward to using it here and in classes.

Attach the diecuts to the card...that's it!  Square cards and multiple layers require extra postage - but I hope you'll agree that this card is worth the effort, and a few extra cents.

Forget Me Not Blooms, Grass Stitched Circle Frame and Garden Sketches by Jean Okimoto

Let's scatter some Forget Me Not Blooms flowertops across the Grass Stitched Circle Frame for a fresh spring greeting.  A Garden Sketches greeting banner, glittery Wink of Stella highlights and gem stickers add pretty accents.

Hello, Jean Okimoto here with the details behind my April Floral Challenge inspiration card.  It's great to go through my stash of watercolored papers and find just the right colors for a background.  Imagine Crafts Kaleidacolor dye ink refills were used here.  Add a few dotty accents in Brilliance Pearlescent Jade with a design from the Open Studio Bird Sanctuary Clear Stamp Set.  Cut it with the 2-¾" Square Basics die.

MemoryBoxForgetMeNotBlooms-MemoryBoxGrassStitchedCircleFrame-MemoryBoxSquareBasics-MemoryBoxOpenStudioGardenSketches-MemoryBoxOpenStudioBirdSanctuary-JeanOkimoto-ImagineCrafts-ImpressCardsAndCrafts-DiecutCards-DiecutWatercolorCards-DiecutFlowerCards

Cut a bunch of flowers from the Forget Me Not Blooms set from scraps of the watercolored paper.  The little blossoms aren't attached to the stems - it's quick and easy to cut them separately, without the delicate stems.

Stamp the greeting from the Garden Sketches Clear Stamp Set on the ultra-smooth Bright White Cardstock from Impress with Memento Grape Jelly.  Dry the ink, then cut it with the matching Garden Sketches die.  We love this smooth white cardstock for stamping, diecutting and crisp white cards!

Cut Grass Stitched Circle Frame from the same Bright White Cardstock.

Attach two strips of Pastel Purple washi tape - one of the many pretty colors and patterns from Birch Press Designs - to a side-folded A-2 card of...yes, Bright White Cardstock.  Attach the diecuts - use foam dots for the greeting.

Highlight the flower centers with clear glittered Wink of Stella.  Add light purple gem stickers.
