Inlay a Felt Plush Elegant Butterfly

The new Plush Elegant Butterfly - designed to be lovingly layered and stitched - is also perfect for quick inlaid felt designs.  Hi, Jean Okimoto here, hoping you're having a great weekend!

Gather some scraps of summer-colored wool-blend felt and back them with adhesive label or sticker paper.  The backing stabilizes the felt and keeps adhesives from soaking through.

P1370326

Diecut the felt pieces.  Here's an easy way to remove the little stitch dots - place the diecut on a scrap of felt in a weird color that you won't be using - then use a toothpick or BBQ skewer to push the little dots out and onto the felt scrap under it.  The little dots will stick to the felt scrap and can easily be disposed of.  Skip this step if you're actually stitching the butterfly - the needle and floss will do it for you!

The light peach-colored piece in the center is layered - the other felt diecuts are inlaid.

Attach gold glittered washi tape to a scrap of paper and diecut the largest butterfly center section from the Morning Garden Butterflies set.

Score, cut and fold a 5-1/2" square white card.  Diecut the folded card with the Straight Stitches die to add some texture to the front - and inside - of the card.

Stamp the greeting - from the new Spring Lilacs Clear Stamp Set - with Brilliance Pearlescent Jade and dry the ink.

Attach the butterfly.  Add green gem stickers.

P1370312

Square cards require extra postage - but I think this happy card deserves special handling.  Hope you agree!

The Memory Box Plush Collection creates great felt keepsakes and hand-stitched gifts.  They're also great for cards, layouts and mixed media.  Get the most from your dies by using them in different ways- you'll love their versatility.

Thanks very much for stopping by - have a great weekend!

Spring Lilacs and Birthday Sentiments
by Jean Okimoto

Celebrate a birthday with the new Spring Lilacs Clear Stamps Set and Spring Lilacs Die Set - it's sure to be a special day!  Add a trellis-y  background with a die from the Distressed Baptisia Collage Set and a classic greeting from the new Birthday Sentiments Clear Stamp Set.

Hi, Jean Okimoto here, with an easy way to eliminate some of the stress of watercoloring.  It's a challenge to stay inside the lines - literally and figuratively - when I'm coloring.  The watercolors just have a way of escaping out onto the background, especially a white background.  Eliminate that issue by tinting the background with a light wash of your dominant color and air-dry it.  I've used a tiny, very diluted amount of the Pansy Dye Ink Refill for Kaleidacolors.  Iron it with a dry iron on the cotton setting to smooth the paper out again.  Stamp the lilacs with Imagine Crafts Espresso Truffle Memento Luxe and emboss it with detail clear powder.   MemoryBoxSpringLilacsClearStampSet-MemoryBoxSpringLilacsDieSet-MemoryBoxOpenStudioRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxOpenStudioDistressedBaptisiaCollageSet-MemoryBoxOpenStudioBirthdaySentimentsClearStampSet-JeanOkimotoWatercoloredCards-ImagineCrafts-WatercoloredFlowerCards

Watercolor the image with diluted Pansy, Spring Green and Spruce refill inks.  Let it dry.  Cut it with the coordinating Spring Lilacs die.  Diecutting the lilacs is quick and easy if you align the die with the stem and lower edges of the leaves first - then with the blossom at the top.  A bit of painter's tape at those 4 spots will secure the die and produce great results!

Stamp and emboss the greeting from the new Open Studio Birthday Sentiments Clear Stamp Set on white cardstock.  Cut it with the 3-1/4" x 4-1/2" Rectangle Basics Die.

Cut white cardstock with the grid pattern from the Distressed Baptisia Collage set.  Trim it with the 2" x 3-1/4" Rectangle Basics Die.  It's a must-have set of 16 dies perfectly proportioned cutting layers for A-2 cards - and it's great for A-6 and A-7 cards too.  I can't design a rectangle card without it!

Attach everything to a top-folded A-2 card of textured white cardstock - use foam dots behind the lilacs at the top.   Add pale violet gem stickers.

May Release Blog Blitz – A Fish Tales Stamp Set Giveaway
by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxFishTales-MemoryBoxOpenStudioRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxSeaweedStalks-JeanOkimoto-PeerlessWatercolors-WatercoloredBackgrounds-FishCards-DiecutFishCards-ImpressCardaAndCrafts-ImagineCrafts-ShizenDesign

Bright tropical colors and the new Fish Tales Clear Stamp Set send birthday wishes today.  Hello, welcome back to our May Release Blog Blitz! Jean Okimoto here with another design featuring this great new clear stamp set and the matching set of dies.

MemoryBoxFishTales-MemoryBoxMayRelease-MemoryBoxOpenStudioRectangleBasics-MemroyBoxSeaweedStalks-JeanOkimoto-WatercoloredBackgrounds-PeerlessWatercolors-ShizenDesignWatercolorPaper

It's easy to organize (and find!) your favorite "open" die sets if they're attached to curtain rings from a fabric or home store.  I attach the rings to a magnetic bar that's attached to a shelf in my work area.  That's a lot of attachment - but it works for me!

Paint deckle-edged rough watercolor paper from Shizen Design with Peerless Watercolors and air-dry it.  Add a pearly wash of diluted Peerless Transparent Silver and heat-set it.  The deckled edges and texture enhance the shimmery layer and contrast nicely against the matte diecuts.   Trim the right and bottom edges with a Rectangle Basics die.

Gather an assortment of yellow, orange, flamingo, turquoise and green cardstock.  Stamp the happy little fish and wavy seaweed  from the Fish Tales Clear Stamp Set with VersaFine Onyx Black.   Heat-set the ink, then diecut the designs  with the matching Fish Tales Die Set.

Diecut Seaweed Stalks from light green cardstock.

Stamp the greeting - from the Fish Tales Clear Stamp Set - on lime green cardstock.  Cut it with a Rectangle Basics die.

Score, cut and fold a 5-1/2" square white card.  Attach the diecuts and greeting - use foam dots for the bright yellow, orange and turquoise fishes.  Add blue gem stickers.

Want a chance to win the Fish Tales Clear Stamp Set?  Just add your comment to today's post - and it may soon join your Memory Box and Open Studio Collection.  Add your comment to Jenny's Fish Tales blog blitz post too - and all of the other Design Team posts during this week's blog blitz.  The entry deadline is 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, May 14th.  Good Luck to you!

We'll be using a few of the newest dies and stamps at the May 13th SUMMER HEARTS class at Impress.  We have so many great heart- and love-themed dies, stamps and papers - let's put them to work on summery cards for weddings, thank-yous and cards to say "I'm thinking of you."  See you on Saturday!

Sheer Circle Trimming and Fish Tales from the May Release
by Jean Okimoto

A junior fish from the new Fish Tales Clear Stamp Set is the awesome alpha fish here, leading the Family of Fish across a watercolored backdrop.  The new Sheer Circle Trimming border - also from the May Release - accents this beachy scene.  Hi, Jean Okimoto here, with a design for a Dad, grad, or anyone special.

MemoryBoxFamilyOfFish-MemoryBoxFishTalesClearStampSet-MemoryBoxFishTalesDieSet-MemoryBoxSheerCircleTrimming-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-JeanOkimoto-ShizenDesign-PeerlessWatercolors-WatercoloredFishCards

Paint deckled watercolor paper from Shizen Design with Peerless Watercolors and dry it.  Add a light layer of diluted Peerless Transparent Gold for a soft shimmer.

MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-JeanOkimoto

Specialty papers can be challenging - especially when you need straight edges and sharp corners.  Memory Box dies are the perfect solution. They're great for cutting artpapers - including this watercolor paper made from recycled garment industry fabric scraps and the metallic marbled paper for the stamped fish.

Place the deckled edge inside the cutting edges of the Rectangle Basics die and trim the watercolor paper.  I love the way the edge complements the Sheer Circle Trimming.

Cut white cardstock with the 3-3/4" x 5" Rectangle Basics die.  Cut it again with the Sheer Circle Trimming.  Determine the placement of the watercolor paper.  Cut the watercolor paper with the matching section of the Sheer Circle Trimming die.

Cut Family of Fish from Turquoise Cardstock. Remove the fish on the right side.

Stamp the fish on metallic marbled paper from Shizen Design with VersaFine Onyx Black.  Emboss it with detail clear powder.  Cut it with the matching die from the new Fish Tales Die Set.  Cut an extra fish from cardboard and layer it for dimension.

Stamp  and emboss the greeting - from the new Spring Lilacs Clear Stamp Set - on orange cardstock.

Attach everything to a white A-2 card - use foam dots to attach the greeting.  Add gold gem stickers.

Do you have a stash of special artpapers that are a bit challenging to cut because of their texture, fibers and metallic inks?  Trimmers, paper punches and scissors tend to slip and/or tear the paper.  Cut them with Memory Box and Poppystamps dies instead!

Please be sure to join us for our May Collection Blog Blitz next week.  We can't wait to introduce you to our newest dies and stamps - and share our ideas with you.   New products, design inspiration and prizes!

Thanks for stopping by...have a great weekend.

Fish Tales from the May Release
by Jean Okimoto

Meet the great new Fish Tales Die Set and coordinating Fish Tales Clear Stamp Set from our May Release! Don't they make you want to smile too?  Hi, Jean Okimoto here, with the first of many projects featuring our latest release.

I don't usually associate fish with lovable personalities - like you would with puppies, ponies or pandas. These fun little guys are exceptional and would brighten anyone's day, or make a good day even better.

MemoryBoxMay2017Collection-MemoryBoxFishTales-MemoryBoxDibbleDotBorder-MemoryBoxOpenStudioThankYouSentiments-JeanOkimoto-ImagineCrafts-ShizenDesign-ImpressCardsAndCrafts-WatercoloredFishCards-DiecutFishCards

I've discovered a different watercolor paper here.  It's Shizen Design's Professional Grade Smooth Watercolor Paper -  100% recycled material from garment industry scraps.   It's available in different sizes, finishes and shapes - these are from a set of fifty 5" x 7 " sheets.  I love how easy it was to blend the Imagine Crafts Kaleidacolor dye ink refills.  It was heat-set, then pressed with a dry iron on the cotton setting.  It's great for stamping too!

Stamp the fish with VersaFine Onyx Black and heat-set it the ink.  Cut the fish.  Cut another set of them from cardboard, then cut the top left, top right and bottom right fishes from cardboard again to create different levels of dimension.  Attach the additional layers.

Unfold a Pool Notecard and cut the new Dibble Dot Border so the white interior becomes the new card front.  Instant bubbles!  Stamp the greetings - from the new Open Studio Thank You Sentiments Clear Stamps Set - using a stamp positioner and Brilliance Pearlescent Purple.

Attach the smiley fish.  Add clear gem stickers.

Hope you enjoyed this beachy intro to some of the new dies and stamps in our May Collection.  Be sure your favorite Retailer has placed their order - I know Impress has!  We'll be using several of the new Memory Box and Poppystamps products in the Summer Hearts classes on May 13th and May 29th.

We'll be blog-blitzing the May Collection next week - more inspiration, and great giveaways too!

Thanks for visiting...

Butterfly Wing Medley on the Heart Wire
by Jean Okimoto

Celebrate Earth Day by up-cycling some favorite dies and creating a whole new look with the Butterfly Wing Medley and Heart Wire.  Hi - Jean Okimoto here - with a design featuring some of my favorite dies.

Full disclosure...I spent several minutes looking for my "Butterfly Wire" die in my stash and online before realizing that it didn't exist, except in my little mind.  Ever have days like that?

I could visualize the card, so I just decided to work backwards from that mental image and create it for you anyway.

MemoryBoxHeartWire-MemoryBoxButterflyWreath-MemoryBoxRectangleBasics-MemoryBoxButterflyWingMedley-MemoryBoxNewBeginnings-JeanOkimoto-WatercoloredCards-WatercoloredButterflyCards-PeerlessWatercolors-ButterflyDiecuts

Paint watercolor paper in shades of pink, yellow and coral Peerless Watercolors.  Dry it, then spritz it with Imagine Crafts Gold Sheer Shimmer Spritz.  Dry it again.  Cut it with Butterfly Wing Medley - the edges are cut out and the center remains intact.  Lightly crease the centers and cut or gently pull the butterflies until they're released from the background.

Use a waterbrush to blend some color onto the white edges that were revealed when the butterflies were released.

Cut Heart Wire from pink cardstock.  Trim portions of the hearts above and below the "wire" - just enough so they won't be visible when the butterflies are overlaid.

Cut a 3-¾" x 5" rectangle of smooth white cardstock with the Rectangle Basics die.  Stamp New Beginnings with Rocket Red Gold.  Attach the rectangle to a side-folded A-2 card of textured white cardstock.

Place Heart Wire on the background and attach the butterflies over it - use foam dots for the two largest and left corner butterflies.

Attach Scor-Tape behind gold mirror cardstock and cut the butterfly centers from the Butterfly Wreath Set.  Trim four centers to fit the smaller butterflies.  Attach the centers and add gold gem stickers.

Watercolor the Butterfly Wing Medley
by Jean Okimoto

eP1360787

Be inspired by Dave Brethauer's latest watercoloring video and create a Butterfly Wing Medley card in your favorite colors.  Hi, Jean Okimoto here, with a great technique from Dave's latest video.  Follow Dave's water-dipping  process to create vivid, saturated watercolored diecuts for cards, layouts, planners and collages.

Dave diecuts the watercolor paper before saturating and painting it because he always designs with a plan in mind.  I had no idea what my card would be like so I started off by soaking a 6" square of watercolor paper in water for about 3 hours.  His video is a must-see for all of the details and techniques.

Paint the saturated paper with Peerless Watercolors and set it aside to dry.  Spritz it Imagine Crafts Gold Sheer Shimmer Spritz and heat-set it.

Diecut it with Butterfly Wing Medley - the die is designed to cut the wing outlines but keep the center intact.  Crease each butterfly lightly where it's still attached to the background then carefully cut or pull it away.  Use a waterbrush to blend some color onto the white edges that were revealed when the butterflies were released.

P1360777
Cut textured white cardstock with the 4" x 5-¼" Rectangle Basics die.  Run the die through the machine lengthwise and cut Tall Grassy Stems Border.  It's  easier to run dies through lengthwise - especially long designs like borders, greetings and ribbons.  (The Spellbinders label appears twice here because I'm using a new, clear cutting plate above the die, cardstock and bottom cutting plate.)

Cut another 4" x 5-¼" rectangle for the background.  Attach the border to the background.  Stamp the greeting - from the So Many Things to Love clear stamps set - with Brilliance Pearlescent Lavender and dry the ink.  Attach the butterflies - use foam dots for a few of them.

Attach it to a top-folded A-2 card of textured white cardstock.  Add green gem stickers.

P1360795

Special thanks to everyone from last weekend's GOING GREEN class at Impress!  Thanks too - Ann, Shari and Erin - for helping us gather everything we needed to create our cards.

If you're in the Seattle area (or  can get here this weekend!) - be sure to stop by both Impress stores for their annual Spring Sale!   It starts today and runs through Sunday April 23rd.  Enjoy a 20% discount, find the best selection of the newest products and have a chance to win great prizes.   It's the best time to stock up on the Memory Box, Open Studio and Poppystamps designs on your wishlist - and the papers and felt you'll want for diecutting and stamping.

New Possibilities with the Butterfly Spectacle
by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxButterflySpectacle-MemoryBoxButterflyEnsemble-MemoryBoxMorningGardenButterflies-MemoryBoxNewPossibilities-JeanOkimoto-WatercoloredButterflyCards-MemoryBoxButterflyCraftDies-BrillianceInkpads-ImpressCardsAndCrafts

Looking for more Butterfly Spectacle inspiration?  Create a window card that opens to reveal a watercolored Butterfly Ensemble trio and some sparkly lavender gems.  Hi again, Jean Okimoto here with my 401st post on Outside the Box.

The actual post count is a bit higher - maybe around 550 - it all began about 9 years ago on the InKollage blog.  It was a very steep learning curve for me - but Dave was very patient about it all.  Thanks Dave!  And to all of you,  thanks for visiting, and for all of your comments and likes on our Facebook page too!

Back to today's card...here's the inside view:

MemoryBoxButterflySpectacle-MemoryBoxButterflyEnsemble-JeanOkimoto-WatercoloredButterflies-WatercoloredButterlyCards-MemoryBoxButterflyCraftDies

Scrunch a piece of waxed paper and rub it briskly over the die to help release all of the little bits.  Next, here's an easy way to diecut Butterfly Spectacle without ruining the card front -

MemoryBoxButterflySpectacle-JeanOkimoto-MemoryBoxButterflyCraftDies

Attach pieces of rolled painter's tape in the areas that will be cut away.   No worries about tearing the front of the card when you remove the die!  Diecut Butterfly Spectacle, then carefully peel the die away from the card.

Stamp New Possibilities with Brilliance Pearlescent Jade.  PJ is my favorite color for butterfly cards.  What's your favorite Brilliance inkpad color?

Cut three of the Butterfly Ensemble butterflies from watercolored paper.  Attach them inside the card using foam dots near the centers

MemoryBoxButterflySpectacle-MemoryBoxButterflyEnsemble-MemoryBoxMorningGardenButterflies-MemoryBoxNewBeginnings-JeanOkimoto-WatercoloredButterflies-WatercoloredButterflyCards-WatercoloredButterflyDiecuts-BrillianceInkpads

Cut the butterfly centers from turquoise glittered cardstock using the die from the Morning Garden Butterflies set.  Add lavender gem stickers.  Square cards require extra postage - but I think it'll be worth it.  Hope you agree!

If you're in Seattle - I'll see you at Impress for Saturday's  GOING GREEN class - and more butterfly cards.

Thanks for stopping by - please join us again tomorrow for Melissa's great design!

New Beginnings with the Butterfly Swell
by Jean Okimoto

MemoryBoxButterflySwell-MemoryBoxButterflyEnsemble-MemoryBoxMorningGardenButterflies-MemoryBoxBeginnings-JeanOkimoto-WatercoloredCards-WatercoloredButterflyCards-WatercololredButterflies-ImagineCrafts-MementoLuxe-ImpressCardsAndCrafts

The beautiful Butterfly Swell is quickly becoming a new favorite - and it's easy to see why!  Here is it, on a watercolored background diffused by pearlescent vellum.  Hi, Jean Okimoto here with another way to use this great new die.

My watercolored paper stash included this colorful piece of spritzed, splashed and spotted inkiness.  It was just waiting for the right die to come along!

Cut Butterfly Swell from a 3-¾" x 5-¾" rectangle  of white cardstock.  I shimmed some of the detailed areas with painter's tape.  Cut three Butterfly Ensemble butterflies from pearlescent vellum.

Stamp the greeting with Memento Luxe Olive Grove and heat-set it.

P1360721

Tape the vellum butterflies - slightly offset - behind the Butterfly Swell.  Slip the watercolored background behind the top and bottom Butterfly Swell tabs.   Attach it to an A-6 (4-⅝" x 6-¼") card of light gray cardstock.

Attach three butterfly centers of gold mirror cardstock cut with the die from the Morning Garden Butterflies set.  Add pale pink gem stickers.

MemoryBoxButterflySwell-MemoryBoxButterflyEnsemble-MemoryBoxMorningGardenButterflies-MemoryBoxBeginnings-JeanOkimoto-ImpressCardsAndCrafts-ImagineCrafts-MememtoLuxe-WatercoloredCards-WatercoloredButterflies-WatercoloredButterflyCards-VellumButterflies

Butterfly weather will be here soon...you'll find so many ways to use Butterfly Swell and the coordinating Butterfly Ensemble and Morning Garden Butterflies sets.  They're like basic ingredients in a recipe - literally waiting for new beginnings.

Special thanks to everyone from last week's RAINING CATS + DOGS class at Impress!  Rain, cats and dogs are such a big deal here - it was time we featured them on our cards.  We tried to keep the noise down, but probably laughed out loud more than ever that day.  Thanks too - Ann, Shari and Erin - for finding the supplies we needed to create cards, cards and more cards!

See you all again at the GOING GREEN class on April 15th.  We're making 6 cards in a spectrum of greens, with green themes and accents from my stash.  I'll share paper recycling ideas too - like upcycling leftover prints into cool "where did you get that paper?" designs.   Everyone gets a pack of stash extras too.

Thanks for stopping by...
