Be inspired by Dave Brethauer's latest watercoloring video and create a Butterfly Wing Medley card in your favorite colors. Hi, Jean Okimoto here, with a great technique from Dave's latest video. Follow Dave's water-dipping process to create vivid, saturated watercolored diecuts for cards, layouts, planners and collages.
Dave diecuts the watercolor paper before saturating and painting it because he always designs with a plan in mind. I had no idea what my card would be like so I started off by soaking a 6" square of watercolor paper in water for about 3 hours. His video is a must-see for all of the details and techniques.
Paint the saturated paper with Peerless Watercolors and set it aside to dry. Spritz it Imagine Crafts Gold Sheer Shimmer Spritz and heat-set it.
Diecut it with Butterfly Wing Medley - the die is designed to cut the wing outlines but keep the center intact. Crease each butterfly lightly where it's still attached to the background then carefully cut or pull it away. Use a waterbrush to blend some color onto the white edges that were revealed when the butterflies were released.
Cut textured white cardstock with the 4" x 5-¼" Rectangle Basics die. Run the die through the machine lengthwise and cut Tall Grassy Stems Border. It's easier to run dies through lengthwise - especially long designs like borders, greetings and ribbons. (The Spellbinders label appears twice here because I'm using a new, clear cutting plate above the die, cardstock and bottom cutting plate.)
Cut another 4" x 5-¼" rectangle for the background. Attach the border to the background. Stamp the greeting - from the So Many Things to Love clear stamps set - with Brilliance Pearlescent Lavender and dry the ink. Attach the butterflies - use foam dots for a few of them.
Attach it to a top-folded A-2 card of textured white cardstock. Add green gem stickers.
