I've been cleaning up my workroom this past week and going through boxes I haven't looked into for ages. I found a whole pile of Stampbord, a clay surface masonite-like board, each piece 3 1/2" X 5". The idea in using this material is to ink it up with several layers of color, stamp on an image, and then use a scratching tool to remove some of the ink to highlight areas of the stamp.
After I cleared off a workspace on my desk, I gathered up the supplies I needed:
- Distress Inks: Wild Honey, Spiced Marmalade, Rusty Hinge, and Forest Moss
- Ink Blending Tools with foam designated for each color
- Scratching Tool (www.ampersandart.com)
- Stampbord (www.ampersandart.com) (I placed it on a piece of black cardstock for the photo.)
I used Memory Box's G1352 Inspire Butterfly Collage as my stamped image. I think that any of the collage stamps would work well for this project. Here's what I did:
Instructions
- Begin with the lightest color ink and apply it to the Stampbord using the Blending Tool. Work from the edge toward the center, rotating the tile as you go.
- Add the second ink, again working from the edge toward the center, but leave a lighter area in the center with more depth of ink around the edges.
- Continue to add inks and blend them in, leaving the center a bit lighter and edges darker with more concentrated color.
- Ink up G1352 Inspire Butterfly Collage (or one of the other collage stamps) and stamp it onto the Stampbord. I used Jet Black Archival Ink.
- Use the scratching tool to outline the details in the butterfly and to add some dimension to the word "inspire". I also added three lines on the left of the image using a ruler and the scratching tool.
The only thing I have left to do is to ink up the edges with VersaMark and emboss the edges using a colored embossing powder. I'm thinking I'll probably use black, or maybe antique gold or copper. Hmmm...And then I'll add a magnet to the back of it and add it to the cookie sheet inspiration board above my desk.
No Stampbord? I think you could get a similar effect using Distress Inks on white cardstock, the stamped image and a Uniball Signo White pen to outline the details you want to highlight.
I've packed up the rest of the Stampboard, a pile of Distress Inks and Blending Tools as well as Scratching Tools for my class on Monday. And I'm taking ALL of the Memory Box collage stamps! It will be fun to see what people create!
Happy Stamping!

This will be fun -- we at Your Maine Stamper LOVE Monday afternoon classes with Anne. Connie

This is a fascinating technique although I have never heard of stampboard! I love the final results - thanks for sharing all the steps!!
